“TROFEO SCACCABAROZZI” SKYMARATHON 2012
Pasturo Lecco. September, 16th, 2012.
The " Sentiero delle Grigne- Trofeo Scaccabarozzi ", in 2012 has been awarded of the final race of the ITALIAN SKYMARATHON CHAMPIONSHIP, among the 4 races that constitute the calendar valid for the assignment of the national title of this very tough specialty of races on mountains. Skyrunning means running over hills and dales, from cool forests to the snow of alpine footsteps; adding to the fatigue of the ride the difficulty of running across harsh ascents and dangerous descents at two, three, four thousand meter altitude.
The "The Sentiero delle Grigne Trofeo Scaccabarozzi" SKyMarathon was born to remember the
mountain climber Giacomo Scaccabarozzi, who died on these slopes in 1998.
The Race, for several times included in the world championship, has been awarded the final
race of the Italian 2012 championship. The Race organization is based on a strong cooperation
among hundred of volunteers, tens of associations and sponsors from Valsassina, Lecchese area,
Brianza region, along with the very important support of the local institutions such as
Lombardia Region, Province, Municipalities and Mountain Communities.
The Race
The competition is also called "Sentiero delle Grigne", referring to the ancient traditional
communication path between the 8 refuges on the slopes of the mountains surrounding Lecco and Valsassina.
The full race takes about 5 hours to be completed and is therefore the longest race around the world.
The record belongs to the Spaniard Kilian Jornet with 4h 43'54" (2007) and
Emanuela Brizio with 5h. 32'01" (2008).The route, with its 43 km and 3.200 difference in altitude
is the highest in the 2011 panorama and technically divided into three parts: the slope
to Grigna Meridionale (2.177m) -classified as technical with some equipped lines
and chains- followed by a descent and a slope to Grigna Settentrionale (2.410 m) -flowing but fatiguing-
and the final one along the fast and insidious descent towards the end of the valley and the finish
line of Pasturo, the lowest point of the run (650 m altitude).
The following alpine refuges: Soldanella, Rosalba, Elisa, Bietti, Bogani, Brioschi, Pialeral and Riva are
located along the race path acting both as logistics bases for the organization and refreshment points for
the athletes.
The surrounding scenario is a classical view of Lombardia mountains: the limestone of the walls and the
height of the two peaks, Grigna Settentrionale and Meridionale -well visible from Milan- separate Valsassina
from Lecco Lake, making together with the geography, the history and destiny of this pre-alpine valley,
so well known in the Lombardia region.
The look to the horizons from the race path gives a really impressive panorama: the first peaks of
Apennines and Pianura Padana on the South; the Piemonte Alps and the pyramid of Monviso on the West
and the numerous Swiss peaks standing on the North. Historical alpine ways, opened by legendary
mountaineers, trekking footpaths, old mines now available for visits, museums, green woods,
mountain pasture, as well as for sailing sports on Lecco Lake, a real attraction for
tourists and excursionists.
